Healthy Living: Mind, Body, Spirit and Emotions in the Twenty-First Century
Anger Management Education and Counseling is one of the fastest growing fields in the helping professions today. When one really understands anger management and it’s potential for facilitating personal growth that leads to a healthier more fulfilling life it makes good sense. Anger management education is fulfilling because anger is something that everyone experiences in their daily lives. Gaining a deeper understanding of anger opens the doors to many other areas of human experience. Anger management facilitates personal growth that allows us to be more open to our own potentials for success in life. Greater success in life is possible when we become more connected to others and this is something that anger management fosters.
Here we promote an anger management program that is built upon four solid interrelated cornerstones. These cornerstones are: 1. Understanding anger, what it is and where it comes from. 2. Stress management, how stress is related to anger and how to understand our stress and manage it effectively to make positive changes in our lives. 3. Emotional intelligence, understanding ourselves in relationships and understanding others in relationships. How our social relationships affect others and ourselves are one of the most interesting and exciting aspect of anger management. Emotional intelligence in an anger management program is what ties the program together. 4. Communication, this is a key element in any effective anger management program. Effective communication allows us to strengthen our relationships with ourselves and others. Without the knowledge and practice of these four interrelated areas of we falter and experience difficulties in many areas of our lives.
Of course anger management is not for everyone. How do we know if we would benefit from an anger management program? Here at the Alhambra Counseling Center we begin with an intake process. We schedule an appointment and take a personal history of the individual’s problems and conflicts. We administer the Conover Assessment that helps determine where our learned skills are strong and or in need of development. Areas of skill development that are mapped are: 1. Self- Assertion; 2. Stress Management; 3. Empathy; 4. Aggression; 5. Deference; 6. Motivation for Change. These are skills that are learned during our lives and when these skills are not properly understood and used we experience problems with our loved ones, in our workplace, with our friends, or with the law. The important thing to always keep in mind is that learned behavior that causes problems in our lives can be unlearned and replaced with healthier functioning skills.
Anger management is about learning and making positive changes in our everyday lives. Using the Anderson & Anderson model helps make change fun and rewarding.
